Barkin' Bill Smith

Chicago blues vocalist (reputedly named - ironically, because he doesn't bark at all - by Homesick James) who has fronted rough-and-ready blues bands at mostly west-side bars and showcases for years. Recently, his health has not been good and his local appearances have been few and far between. His most recent recording as a leader was 1994's Gotcha!, and he also appeared on Dave Specter's Bluebird Blues (Delmark Records).

The veteran vocalist wraps his suave, bottomless pipes around a well-chosen cross-section of covers, from Duke Henderson's jump blues "Get Your Kicks" and Johnny "Guitar" Watson's "I Love to Love You" to tougher straightforward blues originally cut by Freddy King, Guitar Slim, Jimmy Rogers, and Little Walter. A cadre of local session aces provides fine support, especially guitarist Steve Freund (who receives a couple of instrumental showcases). ~ Bill Dahl, All Music Guide
